My 2021 personal return (federal and state) was rejected according to an email from turbo tax. No reason was provided in the email, so I do not know what to do. I have not received anything from the IRS. I was due a refund for both federal and state. The return was filed on time. I was patiently waiting for more information but nothing arrived so here I am. I did sign into Turbo Tax 2021 but did not see any messages. Can someone provide advice as to what I need to do. I did not see how I could contact Turbo Tax to receive guidance.
Thank you.
John

If it rejected it was never filed. You will have to print and mail it to the IRS and state now. If you are expecting a refund there is no penalty for filing late. Did you use the Online web version or the Desktop installed program? If you used the Desktop program your online account won't know anything about your return.
For the Desktop program you have to check the filing status inside the program. Open your return and go up to the top black menu bar first item
File > Electronic Filing > Check Electronic Filing Status
A rejected return was not filed or sent to the IRS at all. And now the only way to file a 2021 return is by mail. Print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Thank you.
I used the Desktop version of the report. Recently, I separately sent to the IRS two 1099's that were new to me the results for which were included in the return. Hopefully that will help. ?
What? You just sent in a couple of 1099's separately----without actually adding that income to the rejected---UN-filed-- tax return? Please explain exactly what you did. Very explicitly. It sounds like you messed up instead of fixing the problem.
The forms were actually 1065s and those results were included in the return. One comment suggested that I submit the forms since I mailed it in. It was additional support for what was submitted in the tax return.
We are having a hard time making sense of this. Your post says that your return was rejected, so we explained to you that a rejected return was not filed at all, and that you now need to file it by mail. Now you are saying that you sent in some documents separately from the tax return. According to what you told us.....your return was not filed. Did you actually file a Form 1040 by mail after the e-file had been rejected?
Let me try this again. An email from Turbo Tax said that it was rejected. Turbo Tax (Desktop) does not show it as rejected, but I like I stated, no reason was given in the Turbo Tax email. Today, I went online to the IRS website and found an IRS copy of my return and a transcript of the return. I also, today, I was able to submit a question to the IRS as to the exact status of my return.
