We have two children in college and claimed the American Opportunity credit on both kids on our 2019 tax return expecting a $500 refund. This week we received a notice (CP11) from the IRS noting that there was an error on our 8863 and we owe the IRS $4000. I called the IRS and was informed that they could not tell me why our 8863 was rejected, but offered to set up a payment plan or compromise payment. I told the IRS agent on the phone that I wasn't interested in a compromise because we believe that the information on our 2019 return is correct. He then transferred me to hyperspace. Should I try to call back and speak with a different agent or mail them additional information regarding our filing?
