Received a letter from the IRS stating that I owe them $347 due to line 33 education credits. Was this asking for my school expenses ?

Yes.  If you have received a letter from the IRS asking about your Form 1040A, Line 33 Education Credits (or Form 1040, Line 49), they are looking for you to prove the expenses that created the credit; that is your tuition and other deductible education expenses such as books and supplies.

Copies of the documents showing your paid tuition and receipts for your books and other supplies will serve to answer this notice.  Tuition is only deductible for the year that you actually paid it in.  The 1098-T alone will not work.  A copy of your student account transcript or cancelled checks is best.
