When you e-file your returns it eliminates the needs for you to mail in any documentation with your return.

It looks like now that I have several 1099-R forms with Copy B required to be attached to my tax form, I will have to mail in a paper, and not use e-file. Looking at IRS form it says "Authorized IRS e-file Providers are prohibited from submitting electronic returns to the IRS prior to the receipt of all Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R from the taxpayer." Unfortunately, Turbo Tax does not have an attachment or upload option for Copy B of 1099-R.
@LB641 Where are you seeing that you have to include a hard copy of the Form 1099-R with the e-filed tax return?
If you have received the Form 1099-R and entered it in the TurboTax program there is no requirement or need for a physical copy of the form when the return is e-filed. Just like there is no requirement for a physical copy of the W-2 if the W-2 is entered in the TurboTax program and you are e-filing the 2022 tax return.
upper right corner of the 1099-r says copy b is to be attached.. IRS paper says Authorized IRS e-file Providers are prohibited from submitting electronic returns to the IRS prior to the receipt of all Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R from the taxpayer.
That is only required if you are mailing the tax return. If e-filing the form no physical copy is required since all of the information from the 1099-R is included in the electronically filed tax return.
I have included the tax data from my 1099-R since 2004 with the e-filed tax return and have never had an issue with the IRS.
you are being fastidious.
The whole point of e-File is to eliminate paper.
.
If paper was needed that would wipe out the majority of about 148 million e-filed returns each year.
If you e-filed your return, you do not have to mail the 1099-R with the return to the IRS. If you mail the return and 1099-R to the IRS after e-filing, you could cause an extended delay in processing your return. The 1099-R will be provided to the IRS by the sponsor who issued the 1099-R. However, you will want to keep a copy of the 1099-R with your copy of the return. If you are not e-filing and are mailing your return, you will want to include a copy of the 1099-R with the mailed return. The designation "Authorized IRS e-file providers are prohibited from submitting electronic returns to the IRS before the receipt of all forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R" refers to providers filing a return on your behalf, such as a CPA, EA, or individual other than yourself preparing your return.
