You definitely need to file an amended return since your original is wrong. Options are:
Since you must mail, tracking is recommended.
Good Morning. I completed my W2 and small business taxes, printed everything out but didn't mail them out yet. I don't efile. I needed to remove a business deduction and the only option was to amend, eventhough I'm mailing and didn't efile. Should I mail the amended and original returns together and write a separate check for the extra that I owe?
If you are submitting your return by mail and never filed the original, you would not need to file an amended return as it will not be an accurate return.
If you need to change any part of your return before mailing, you can click on add state, and it will open the return back up. Do not worry, you would not actually be adding another state return. @Ilc123
I tried adding a state like you mentioned, and it still printed as an amended return. The only part I changed was removing my vehicle expenses for my side mobile food business. I drive from my house to my location and back home. If I drove from one location to another location, I could write off those miles. Everything else is the same.
You could cancel the amended return and re-enter your adjustments. There is an option for that on your menu bar. However, you should be able to print out the complete return and just discard the form 1040-X, as the form 1040 and associated schedules will be updated with your adjustments. When you are on your home page in TurboTax, you should see an option to print out your complete return.
I've called Turbotax and there aren't any options to adjust my return, except an amend option. I tried the state option like you mentioned, and it makes me amend.
You can adjust your tax return by starting an amendment, but if this is the first time you are mailing anything to the IRS for 2022, you can't send the 1040-X with your return.
As ThomasM pointed out, you can simply discard the paper copy of your 1040-X and mail the updated 1040. You can also delete the 1040-X from your return.
If you are using TurboTax Online:
If you are using the Desktop version (disc or download):
Okay, I see what you're saying. I did that and everything was updated. Like you said, I'll toss the 1040x forms. Thanks, everyone!
