When mailing my 1040X amended return, do I need to mail my original 1040 with it?

You definitely need to file an amended return since your original is wrong. Options are:

  • Go back to the person that did them wrong and have them correct it.
  • If you have a Turbo Tax account from last year, you can log in and click amend. See how to file an amended return and follow from step 4 below.
  • If you don't have a Turbo Tax account from last year, you will need to create one. See how to file prior year taxes.
    1. First, you will need to re-create the original return. Make sure it matches the original. Federal and state.
    2. Go all the way through the program and mark that you are mailing the return. Of course, you are NOT mailing the return, this just lets the system know that it was sent.
    3. Now, you can go back into the account and click on amend. See how to file an amended return.
    4. Take out all the wrong information and input the correct information. Make your return correct.
    5. Mail in the amended 1040x along with any current forms that are new or changed. Since you are eliminating the Schedule C for self employment, you will not mail it.
    6. Follow your1040x at track an amended return
    7. In addition, you may need to file a state return. See how at  I need to amend my state return.

Since you must mail, tracking is recommended.

When mailing my 1040X amended return, do I need to mail my original 1040 with it?

Good Morning. I completed my W2 and small business taxes, printed everything out but didn't mail them out yet. I don't efile. I needed to remove a business deduction and the only option was to amend, eventhough I'm mailing and didn't efile. Should I mail the amended and original returns together and write a separate check for the extra that I owe?

If you are submitting your return by mail and never filed the original, you would not need to file an amended return as it will not be an accurate return.

If you need to change any part of your return before mailing, you can click on add state, and it will open the return back up. Do not worry, you would not actually be adding another state return. @Ilc123

I tried adding a state like you mentioned, and it still printed as an amended return. The only part I changed was removing my vehicle expenses for my side mobile food business. I drive from my house to my location and back home. If I drove from one location to another location, I could write off those miles. Everything else is the same.

You could cancel the amended return and re-enter your adjustments. There is an option for that on your menu bar. However, you should be able to print out the complete return and just discard the form 1040-X, as the form 1040 and associated schedules will be updated with your adjustments. When you are on your home page in TurboTax, you should see an option to print out your complete return.

I've called Turbotax and there aren't any options to adjust my return, except an amend option. I tried the state option like you mentioned, and it makes me amend.

You can adjust your tax return by starting an amendment, but if this is the first time you are mailing anything to the IRS for 2022, you can't send the 1040-X with your return.

As ThomasM pointed out, you can simply discard the paper copy of your 1040-X and mail the updated 1040. You can also delete the 1040-X from your return.

If you are using TurboTax Online:

  1. Open your return, scroll down to Tax Tools on the bottom of the left side menu.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Click on Delete a form (third on the list at the bottom of the screen).
  4. Find Form 1040-X on the list of forms.
  5. Click Delete to the right.
  6. Confirm your Delete.
  7. Click Continue in the lower right.
  8. Click Continue with my return.

If you are using the Desktop version (disc or download):

  1. Click Forms toward the upper right corner.
  2. Find Form 1040-X on the list on the left.
  3. Highlight it, then click Delete in the lower left corner of the reading pane.
  4. Click on Step by Step in the upper right corner to return to the interview.

Okay, I see what you're saying. I did that and everything was updated. Like you said, I'll toss the 1040x forms. Thanks, everyone!
