Wages not reported on a W-2

My daughter works in her university department library and has recently been paid a lump sum for her work over the last semester. She is paid by a foundation within the university. Federal and state taxes were withheld. She also teaches and has long since received her W-2 for that.  I can't see a place to enter wages and withholding not on a form W-2 in TT.

recently like 2022 or 2021. if paid in 2022 that's the year it gets reported. if 2021 she should have gotten a tax form because of the withholding

She received a check January 5 2022, but the period covered by the work and wages was 2021.  As I said, Federal and state taxes were withheld as was PFL (not sure what that is unless Paid Family Leave of which she took none).

She's trying to check with the University foundation that paid her, but I thought maybe there was another way to report it.  Of course, we also don't have the Foundation's tax id.

If the income your daughter received from the University Foundation was a Grant or Stipend she will enter it in TurboTax as income not subject to self-employment tax.

To report a Grant or Stipend in TurboTax follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your TurboTax account if it is not open.
  2. Select the Wages & Income tab.
  3. Scroll down to Less common income click Show more.
  4. On the page Let's Work on Any Miscellaneous Income click on Other reportable income.
  5. On the page Any Other Taxable Income?  select yes.
  6. On the page, Other Taxable Income enter Grant or Stipend for the description and the amount.
  7. Select continue and answer No on the next page.

If the income was from a Grant or Stipend she should receive a tax form with the Foundation's Tax ID number.

If they paid her with a check with a 2022 date on it then it is 2022 income and she will get a 2022 tax form ... do not enter it on the 2021 return  or she will pay taxes on it twice.

Thanks to all.  She's trying to reach someone at the foundation to get more information.  As I said, they withheld federal and state taxes from her check, so everything is out of synch.  I agree with the "received in 2022, then taxable/reportable in 2022," but it would be helpful if the payer would clarify directly.
