"the time I would have to spend with the IRS on a challenge. "
you can't challenge the IRS finding if you filed 1040 with 6b = zero.
The fact is TurboTax erroneously put zero instead of non-zero.
the amount should be 85% of your benefit assuming no offsets.
for your 2022 tax return, don't elect LSE if you see 6b is zero.
(I'm not sure how you do this in TurboTax, I don't have that software)
In 2022 Form 1040 there is now an LSE checkbox instead of an annotation.
Confirming that I have filed a Claim under the "TurboTax Accuracy Guarantee"
Thanks for the suggestion and link, @Critter-3
I'll post here again when I receive a response from Intuit.
2-April-23 Update:
* On 5-Jan-23, I received a response from Intuit for my TurboTax Accuracy Guarantee claim. Essentially it said that they believe the TurboTax calculations are correct and the IRS is in error to ask me for more tax and some interest on the Social Security Benefit amount at issue.
* On 20-Jan-23, I mailed by USPS a letter to the IRS to dispute the additional tax. With it I sent a copy of the the info from Intuit and the worksheets.
* On 22-Feb-23, I received a letter from the IRS to say, "we need an additional 60 days to send you a complete response"
So, as of today, 2-April-23 I am waiting to hear from the IRS. I decided to post an update here on the Community because, although there is not a lot of money at stake for me, I realize there are others, such as
@Anonymous who have a much higher $ amount at issue.
When I receive a response from the IRS, I will post again. Wish us all luck!
29-April-23 Update:
I just received a letter from the IRS to say,
"Although we try to respond quickly, we often need additional time for research.
Please allow an additional 60 days for us to obtain the information we need and let you know what action we're taking."
When I receive the next response from the IRS, I will post again.
23-Jul-23 Update:
* I received a letter from the IRS. They now agree with the TurboTax calculations for Tax year 2021.
* They have refunded the additional tax and interest that I paid.
This is a good result for me and the rest of us taxpayers. Also, it is a good result for Intuit in that the IRS implicitly agrees that the mathematical computation in TurboTax is correct.
@Critter-3 @fanfare thank you for your comments.
@Anonymous good luck with your pursuit of this same issue with the IRS
