if the letter came from the state and you do not respond with what they requested  you'll never get your refund.

if this is address to send info

Michigan Department of Treasury

Discovery and Tax Enforcement Division

PO Box 30771, Lansing, MI 48909

then is legit.

this doesn't mean other address are fake.

No, those are automated phone lines only.  No access to a real person.

Thanks, but I'm not seeing how any of this "identifies" me, as the state already has all my accurate info, including my address and DL.  So other than putting copies of sensitive info on hard copies and out in the postal system and at risk, I still don't see how this helps at all.

Sorry ... call the state to ask why ... I cannot answer your question.

@msrendo66  You need to contact the state of Michigan if you received a letter requesting that you verify your identity.  All of the taxing authorities are very careful about identity theft these days and you will need to prove who you are to them in order to get your return processed.

I just finished preparing copies of  documents in response to a request from the same organization.

It dawned on me that this could all be some hack trying to get private financial info. so I did a search.

What I'm reading on this site makes me a little less apprehensive, but since anyone can set up web sites, how can anyone ever be sure?

Definitely contact the state yourself to inquire.  Use the phone number on the letter.  If there is no phone number, then call yourself, by clicking on your state in the link below.

Last but not least, contact your state congressman to request authentication of the letter.  You can't be too safe.

Thanks @DianeW777 .

BTW. This wouldn't be the first time the state of Michigan tried every trick in the book to delay refunds, if that's what they're doing.

Assuming you received a notice to verify homestead for 2022, you should contact the State to verify the letter is correct if you are unsure.
