tax return was rejected due to a duplicate 1099R that is not a duplicate

My tax return was rejected due to a duplicate 1099R. It is not a duplicate but two different Roth conversion from the same company at two different times but the same amount. How do I resolve?.

Enter them as one 1099R since they are from the same payer. This should eliminate the error.

This problem took 3 separate attempts to resolve, and contrary to the messages received this is not a problem with the IRS, it rests squarely on TurboTax.  Their efforts to eliminate the possibility of duplicate 1099R forms being accidently submitted created a bigger problem than it tried to fix.  I finally had to change the amounts in Box 1 and Box 2 of all related 1099R forms to be different (up or down) by $0.01 in order for the return to be accepted.  The first two "experts" following supposedly the same guidance were not successful.  In fact, the first one had me make changes to the Payer Name that would have created more problems than the other changes solved.  Clearly not the best experience I've ever had with TurboTax in more than 20 years as a user.

Well, I just followed the first "experts" advice by combining 1099Rs before I saw the latest workaround. I'll try adjusting up/down once it is rejected...again. Not a good look for TurboTax!👎

I tried the option of adding 1 cent to one of my 1099R's also and finally got it to accept the efile.

I connected with TT Support via Twitter and also via phone.  Live TT Support did a screen share with me.  I was very pleased with the interaction.  End result:  added .01 to one of the “nearly identical” 1099Rs ... got accepted message.  (Two different accounts, but each with the identical Gross Amount and Fed Tax withheld, but NOT duplicate.)

Added $.01 to gross amount on one account.  Return “accepted” by Fed and by State.

Yeah, until the feds get two 1099Rs and your return only had one. They’re not smart enough to figure that out. TT just needs to fix the problem that created.

In my case, I do have TWO 1099s that are nearly identical (same amounts) but one for me, one for my spouse.

As noted in the thread you can raise the amounts in boxes 1/2 of one of the form 1099Rs by .01 or $1.

Same here, tees me off that we have to do a work around when names and account numbers differ. I guess I can expect another rejection tonight.

That’s exactly what we had, but we’ve had that for several years without problems until TT decided to fix a non-existent problem.
