Status of mailed filing

I have mailed filing due to the fact my wife doesn't live in the USA and is not a legal resident, and therefore obviously doesn't have a Social Security Number. I originally mailed 3 months ago and when I heard nothing, I mailed again about 2 months ago. I have heard absolutely nothing, and the IRS website claims that they can't provide any information for my return and their phone robot claims the same thing. I am patient regarding the payment of my return, but I need to know they even have the filing on hand and trying to reach a person doesn't work due to limited staff from COVID 19. Is there anything I can do to check and see if they have it? Do I need to mail it out again?

Stop mailing duplicate tax returns.

MAILED RETURNS

Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continueThe IRS is not currently able to process individual paper tax returns. If you already have filed via paper but it has not yet been processed, do not file a second tax return or write to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return or your economic impact payment. Paper returns will be processed  once processing centers are able to reopen.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.  TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site. https://www.irs.gov/refunds

State returns have to be mailed to the state.

Everything I have read says do not mail duplicate returns....That it will slow down the process even more (is that even possible?).  You are not alone.  Many of us have mailed returns and have zero information....Not even confirmation of receipt.  I believe it is just a waiting game.  It is almost June and I mailed my return on March 2.  The IRS website still says there is no information regarding my refund.  I know you're frustrated.  I am, too.

By the way, TT never one time suggested sending returns via certified mail until AFTER the vast majority of us had already mailed ours in.  I'm not blaming TT for this mess, but trust me, they did NOT tell their paid customers to mail via certified mail until after the IRS shut down.
