According to this IRS update as of May 7th:
The IRS is now opening mail within normal timeframes. The IRS has also made significant progress in processing prior year returns. As of April 30, 2021, we had 1 million individual tax returns received prior to 2021 in the processing pipeline. Including current year returns, as of April 30, 2021, we had 17.1 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.
How long you may have to wait: The IRS understands the importance of timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance. We are processing returns received over the summer and fall in 2020 due to the extended July 15, 2020 tax filing due date. While the majority of 2019 refund returns have been processed, in some cases, we are processing tax returns that were mailed with a payment even though payment associated with these returns have been processed by the IRS. However, we are rerouting tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available, and we are taking other actions to minimize any delays. Tax returns are opened in the order received. As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud. If we can fix it without contacting you, we will. If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter. The resolution of these issues depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.
What you should do: If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s my refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. We’re working hard to get through the backlog. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
Thanks, @CatinaT1. Here's my situation: I eFiled my 2020 return through TurboTax on March 25th 2021. I received a confirmation (via Intuit email address) that my return was accepted by the IRS.
As a self-employed person, I am not awaiting a refund - I paid my full tax bill/balance when I efiled on March 25.
It's June 22nd 2021, and I really need my Tax Return Transcript for TY 2020, but it is not in my IRS.gov account where previous years transcripts are. What I see for TY2020 is "no record of a processed tax return" for 2020.
Our landlords are selling their house - we've found one to purchase - our mortgage company is requesting my last two years Tax Return Transcripts - I can only provide 2019's because 2020 shows no record of a processed return, It's been about 90 days since efiling and receiving confirmation that the IRS accepted my return, I think I am going to lose the contract on the house because of this. Do you (or does anyone else) have any insight at all on this? I filed in March. It's Late June. How long does the IRS need? Especially with eFiled documents and confirmation that the return has been accepted?
Normally wouldn't post in a forum, but Ive written the IRS (nothing back) Called the IRS, the Rep said they are behind due to covid, I tied to book an appointment but can't get through, I've searched the web countless hours but every result - every result that comes has "where's my refund" in the description. Again, because I'm self employed I don't get refunds, so none of the results are really helping much. This post however, was the closest to my situation in terms of transcript availability. Not sure who you are, but you provided some good info - if you can help with this one, @CatinaT1 , I'll buy you a beer!
Thank you!
OK ... if you had a balance due on the return then it is not in the transcript section yet because it has not been processed yet even though it was Accepted for processing. Since the IRS is severely backlogged with work returns with balance dues on them have been pushed to the back burner just like last year and there is nothing you can do to speed up the process. Your mortgage company must have an alternative plan for this situation since this is the second year in a row this is happening.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, Critter-3 - I really appreciate any pieces to the 3K piece puzzzle that I can get - because at this stage I'm pretty much on my own - the IRS is unreachable it seems.
OK, just one thing that I wanted to add, to see if it makes a difference in your reply:
On 3/25/21 when I e-filed my return via TurboTax, I also paid my balance in full, so I have no balance due. In fact, when I look at my account info on IRS.gov, I have a negative balance. Is being pushed to the back of the line still applicable to my situation?
Thanks so much!
Yes even though you paid the balance due your return was still a balance due and as such is on the back burner for processing. Sadly due to the limited staff and excessive duties they have once again prioritized the workload and put refunds & stimulus payments first, recalculating returns second and dead last balance due returns so all you can do is wait until your return comes up in the rotation.
