I think by error in a last minute before sending electronically I entered in Turbo Tax QBI Amount (rather substantial amount) since it was not allowing me to leave empty or enter zero and I noticed that my refund amount jumped up by ~$1,500 and to my surprise I received this larger amount refund from IRS. Now I am looking at QBI Deduction and I think I should not have this deduction at all. I am trying to correct in Turbo Tax, but I am not able to find a way to remove this QBI Deduction or zero out the entered QBI amount. Where can I get help with making sure I should not have QBIDeduction in my Income Tax and secondly how to correct with IRS / possibly return part of the refund?
In the past years I have never use this QBI Deduction (actually I have never seen it in Turbo Tax / I was never asked to enter QBI Amount).
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
The QBI deduction (qualified business income) applies to business income which can be from self-employment income (sch C), partnership income (sch K-1), or S corporation income (sch k-1). You would have to revisit the entry screens for one or more of those types of income and you should find the QBI questions, where you can change your entry.
You will have to prepare an amended return to correct your entry. You should first wait until you receive your refund before you do the amended return. You will see an option to prepare the amended return on your home page in TurboTax.
I have looked for questions on QBI but am not able to get to them to change the numbers. I also re-created from scretch return and I was carefull to enter QBI correctly, but now numbers don't match. I will need someone from Intuit (or other expert) take a look side by side or walk me through where are the QBI questions. I plan to contact Intuit / Turbo Tax support on Monday morning.
More information may help diagnose your issue. For example, what business activity (Schedule C, Schedule E, K-1, Form 1099-DIV) "caused" the QBI deduction on the return you filed? And why do you think that is incorrect?
Note that QBI is new starting in 2018.
