Payment has been withdrawn from my bank, but is not showing up as credited to my account on irs.gov

I mailed a 2021 estimated tax payment in December 2021.  It did not clear my bank account until 2-1/2 weeks ago, and it is still not showing up as paid when I search for recent payments in my irs.gov account.  The website says it may take 3 weeks for a check to show up, so next week will be 3 weeks from when the check cleared my bank.  It shows up on my bank statement and online bank account as a check that was submitted electronically by the IRS and is tagged as a "payment" - so I'm pretty sure someone didn't intercept the check and deposit/cash it. Also, since the payment had not been credited to our account by 4/15, I paid the taxes due including the amount of that estimated payment (thinking it may have been lost in the mail or something).  So now we overpaid for 2021 in the amount of that estimated payment.  Will it simply be applied as an estimated payment for 2022, or will I now receive a refund?  Or do I need to refile and claim a refund?   Thanks!

So now we overpaid for 2021 in the amount of that estimated payment. Yes you did indeed.

Will it simply be applied as an estimated payment for 2022,   No it will not.

or will I now receive a refund?  Possibly ... eventually.

Or do I need to refile and claim a refund?  Unknown ... you will have to wait and see what the IRS does first.

Going forward ... use the IRS payment website for Direct Pay for ALL  tax payments so you get a receipt on the spot  - https://www.irs.gov/payments

Yep, I'm already using the online payments for 2022 estimated payments
