The wait time is awful. I didn't have to verify my ID. I filed my taxes on 2/10 and the IRS accepted my return. I rec'd a letter (#4464C) dated 3/25/19 saying my income is being verified and they will contact me if needed. It also said wait 60 days before calling to check on status. I called 5/24 and was told they need more time, call back in 3 weeks. I called again on 6/14 and was finally told my W2 amounts were wrong. It turns out that I somehow entered 2017 amounts instead of 2018 so I was told to amend the return. They didn't send my refund yet. She said the difference will be sent after I file the amended return. Hope this helps...
@Criotta
did you ever get your tax return and if you did they change the information from the wrong w2 u entered or did you have to amend it
Hi, I know this is old but I just made this mistake this year. I filed a 2024 W2 for one of my jobs instead of the 2025 W2.
Wondering what I may expect. It looks like a couple of you had to verify but that the IRS still released the refund. (Im guessing you are expected to amend after that?)
It also looks like one of you who was posting, got the 60 day review code and had to amend before getting your return....
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
If you already submitted your return to the IRS, and they accepted it, then you will just need to sit tight and wait for their response. If you are getting a refund, you can always check the status of it using the IRS tool Where's my refund?
If your return gets rejected, this would be an opportunity to correct the W2 information before correcting the rejection and submitting the return again.
It is possible that they will catch your error and your return may be put in review, which would delay any refund due you. They may mail you a letter explaining that they adjusted your return and will give you a different refund/balance due. Bear in mind too that the IRS will only mail letters and will not contact you by phone, text, or email.
If they don't catch the error, wait until you have received your refund in your bank account before you amend your return.
Did this on accident this year. What happened with yours? Did you have to amend or just verify? Did they process your return without having to amend to get your return released first? Or did you have to amend in order to get your refund?
You asked several questions:
Did this on accident this year. What happened with yours?
These are not tax questions
Did you have to amend or just verify?
You may receive a tax notice requesting additional information.
However, if your taxes are accepted, you will have to amend them.
Did they process your return without having to amend to get your return released first?
The IRS may process the return, but you will get a tax notice 6-8 months later. You will then owe interest and penalties.
Or did you have to amend in order to get your refund?
Refund or if you owe, you should amend your return with accurate information.
If your return is rejected, you can go directly back in and make changes.
If it is accepted, follow these steps:
