Is this ok? I recieved my 3rd stimulus check last year, but my wife and kid did not. I am estimating a refund of $2800 for it. But turbotax only shows a refund of $1400.

Ok, there must be something different entered for either your spouse or the child on TurboTax.   Go back through each dependent and spouse screen and verify everything is entered correctly.   Make sure their social security numbers are entered and make sure the box for the SSN being 'not valid for employment' is UNCHECKED.   Check the dependents birthday entry and double check that the lived with you box and the lived in the US box is 'the whole year'.

On the dependent screens, make sure you indicated that the child did not support themselves (pay over 50%) nor did other family members support them -  it is very easy to make the wrong selection there.  And lastly, on Form 1040, in the dependent section, is the dependent listed there?   If so, what boxes are checked to the right - are there checkmarks in the Child tax credit or Credit for other dependents?

If you are eligible but did not receive your third stimulus payment or if the amount received is not correct or if you did not receive the stimulus for a dependent, you can claim it on your 2021 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit.

In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:

  1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off
  2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen
  3. On the next page titled Did you [or your spouse] get a third stimulus payment?, answer Yes or No
  4. Follow the interview and answer all questions
  5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.

Please read this TurboTax Help topic for more information on the third stimulus.

To check that the Recovery Rebate has been transferred to line 30 of form 1040 and included in your tax refund, please preview your form 1040 by following these steps:

  1. In TurboTax, open your return
  2. In the left-hand column, locate Tax Tools, click on the drop-down arrow then click on Tools
  3. On the Tools Center page, click on View Tax Summary
  4. In the left-hand column, click on Preview my 1040
  5. Your form 1040 will display.
  6. Scroll down to line 30 - Recovery rebate credit and you should see the amount of this credit on this line.

Thanks, but I see a glitch with the calculation. I validated this with Cashapp Tax (previosuly Credit Karma) and they do mention a refund of $2800. But turbotax shows just $1400.

Two things to check:

1. Was your child born in 2021? If so you must indicate when entering his details in the Personal Info section of TurboTax that the child lived with you the WHOLE YEAR.

2. What amount is on line 30 of your form 1040?

Hi MinthT1,

Nope, my kid was born in 2020 and lived with us the whole year. And line 30 on turbotax shows $1400, while the other tax filing applications show $2800 for the same.
