Is there any way to amend the single question "Will someone else claim you on their tax return" on my return?

In the check box on my return where it asks, "Will someone else claim you on their tax return" I THOUGHT that my father was still claiming me but after talking with him, he tells me that he has not claimed me in at least two years.  I received NO stimulus check money whatsoever.  It is my understanding that this is because I indicated that I was being claimed by someone else and I now find out that I was not.

Is there any way I can amend this particular question on my return from YES to NO in hopes of receiving my stimulus money retroactively?

First if you CAN be claimed as a dependent then you must indicate that  EVEN IF  you are not claimed as a dependent.   If you CANNOT be claimed and you are not claimed  then you can amend the return AFTER the original return has been fully processed and the original refund is in hand.

If you are not a dependent then go back to the MY INFO tab and edit yourself to change that answer.

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2020  taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They are related to you.
  • They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or   Mexican resident.
  • They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children
  •       They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.

• They lived with you the entire year.

  • They made less than $4300  (not counting Social Security)
  • You provided more than half of their financial support. More info

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.

Thank you!  I do not believe that I CAN be claimed.  I filed online and the state and federal returns were accepted and I received my refund months ago.  Do you know if it is true or not that if I stated that I was claimed by someone else, that would be the reason I never got any stimulus money?  If so, I need to change that questions from a yes to a no.

Where exactly do I find the  "my info" tab?  I do not see it on my TurboTax home page.  Do I have to go into the "Amend my return" area to do it?  If so, I tried that and wasn't offered any option to change anything other than income and deductions etc.  I saw no place to change my personal information.

Thanks so much for your help!

YES ... start  the amendment process first then follow the screen instructions.

There are two separate questions.

1. Can you be claimed as a dependent?
2. Will the person who could claim you actually claim you?

The second question only relates to the American opportunity tax credit for college students. In some cases, a student who can be claimed as a dependent can still qualify for the AOTC if the parent does not claim them.  The second question has no effect on any other part of a tax return.

The first question, can you be claimed, affects several tax provisions, and in 2020, this included preventing the person who can be claimed as a dependent by someone else from receiving economic stimulus payments or the recovery rebate in their own name.  You must answer yes if you meet the qualifications, regardless of whether the person who could claim you will.

If you don’t meet the qualifications, you can answer no. You should be able to easily amend your tax return to change the answer from yes to no if that fits your actual situation. On your 2020 tax return, that will result in the addition of the recovery rebate, assuming you did not previously receive the stimulus payment. If you did previously receive stimulus payments, then changing your answer won’t change anything on your tax return, and the software will not allow you to file an amended return that does not change your refund amount or tax due.
