You can track the status of your Federal amended return using the IRS website “Where's My Amended Return” or you can call 1-866-464-2050, (You need to wait about 3 weeks from the date you mailed your amended return for information to show up in their system).

If you have a State amended return you can check your State's website, they may have a link to check on your amended return.

@molenatasha This thread is several years old--and the original topic was about amended returns.  Since you chose to post your question in this thread, assuming you amended a tax return by sending a Form 1040X to fix some sort of mistake made on your original return:

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

How can I check the status of my amended tax return. I did an amendment on TurboTax? Will the difference be direct deposited to my account or will they mail me a check for the difference?

How do I know if my amended return was accepted? I filed the amended form with Turbo 8 days ago and the only one I can see is the first one I filed not the amended form. Anybody know how I can find out if the amended form was accepted?

I understand delays because of employee shortage and covid, but checking on amended federal return status is ridiculous. 1) The link takes you to Official Government" site. 2) The IRS site says about amended returns that it may take 16 weeks, but they are running late and it could take 20 weeks. Well, it's been 6 months and 1 week for me and I only know it was accepted and being processed according to Turbotax. Here I am at 27 weeks, and IRS has the wrong status link?  WTH?  If I owed them money, they'd be here asap and confiscating everything I own.

I'm reading here my 2021 amended form was accepted March 10, 2022. It's October 13th. Hello?  There is no way to find out from IRS. The phone number is useless. It only tells me what already know. It was accepted, but where is my money? The link on their site directs you to a private government page. So, how do I know when I'll get it? I don't  remember adding my routing and account numbers on the amended return. What's the story?  Is it being mailed? Is it being direct deposited?  It's 7 months. No info. Come on. Seven months. If I was pregnant, I'd be almost full-term.  WTH?  Pathetic.  I am tempted to file it again. Did the check get lost in the mail?  Is it being direct deposited?  What's up?  Crystal balls don't work.  We need answers.

Yes, among millions when standard tax season has been over for months.  At least the status could be more accurate. If they need more info or correction, it could go into the next tax season. I'll just send it again. I don't care.

@IRS Taxpaper hostage When the IRS wants/needs more information from you they request it by sending you a letter.   If they have not done that, then they do not require more information.   Sorry---we understand your frustration, but sending another amended return will not speed things up--in fact it might slow them down more.

I should not owe the IRS any money.  It’s been the same for 20 years and I never had to pay in and got a refund!  Now they’re

     trying to charge me $759

Without being able to see your return I can't tell why you owe this year.  Double check that amount of taxes withheld on your W-2 was entered correctly.

Common reason for owing this year:

    • Your income increased.
    • You didn't have enough tax withheld from your paychecks.
    • You lost a dependent.
    • You changed your filing status.

Also, there have been a number of tax law changes that might have affected your return.

Here are some of the changes:

    • Those who got $3,600 per dependent in 2021 for the CTC will, if eligible, get $2,000 for the 2022 tax year.
    • For the EITC, eligible taxpayers with no children who received roughly $1,500 in 2021 will now get $500 in 2022.
    • The Child and Dependent Care Credit returns to a maximum of $2,100 in 2022 instead of $8,000 in 2021.
    • No above-the-line charitable deductions. During COVID, taxpayers could take up to a $600 charitable donation tax deduction on their tax returns. However, in 2022, those who take a standard deduction may not take an above-the-line deduction for charitable donations.
