Dear Turbotax,
I would like discuss this error with a support specialist. The IRS has found errors in the last two turbotax generated submissions (2020 and 2021) from me. I am not sure why this has happened but feel like it might relate to two letters we have received this year from the IRS entitled "Your 2021 Economic Impact Payment(s). I followed very carefully the turbotax instructions regarding this Letter 6475 from the IRS.
I owed ~500 and I paid that, and now they want another 1400.

Did you file a joint return last year? Did each spouse receive the $1400 stimulus check? And then when you prepared your tax return did you only enter the amount from ONE of the letters sent to you by the IRS? Did the two of you receive $2800 and did you say you received $1400--based on only one of your letter 6475's? The IRS sent that letter to both spouses. Many people made this mistake and put an extra $1400 on line 30. You cannot get that stimulus money twice, so the IRS recalculates your refund or tax due.
Try checking your online account with the IRS

Does the IRS show that you received a $1400 stimulus or EIP check in 2021? Did you receive it? When you were asked on your tax return did you say no? Was there $1400 on line 30 of your tax return?
If the IRS says you got $1400 last year but you did not receive it you can have it traced.
LOST THIRD STIMULUS CHECK
If you need to trace a payment that the IRS says has been issued to you, mail or fax a completed IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.
in both years there was a point in the TT interview where you were to tell TT how much stimulus you ALREADY received. if you failed to do that, your refund on your tax return was inflated. Since the IRS knows how much they sent you, they compare what they know they sent you versus what you reported they sent you. If that does not match, then your refund is reduced by the difference because, in essence, you are trying to claim the same benefit twice.
by chance did you file a joint return? if so, there were two letters, one sent to you and one sent to your spouse. In TT, you were to enter the SUM of BOTH letters; I see many posts where taxpayers didn't realize they needed to add the two letters together. Since both letters had the same amounts, it was easy to assume they were duplicate letters and / or the spouse who filled out the tax return didn't realize the other also received a letter.
@Zebra3 , I am sorry to hear of your consternation with the performance of the TurboTax software. Without more information, it will be difficult to understand and/or help you with this issue ( both 2020 and 2021). IRS letter demanding a change in your return should have provided an explanation as to what they disagree with.. Perhaps you could use the information from this page to contact support:--->> https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/contact/
The other option is to provide more info about your situation ( without any personally identifiable information ) here and one us volunteers, will indeed help you to the best of our abilities. Need -- (a) how much did you receive as shown on docs from the IRS ( for each of 2020 and 2021 ); (b) did you tell TurboTax as to whether you received the full amount or a lesser amount; (c) did TurboTax ask you to fill out the form reconciling the amounts for each of the years ; (d) any other information such as filing status; if you are citizen; if you have SSN etc. etc.
Look forward to helping you
