Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

If I paid my taxes twice last year (one time on the federal/state websites, and the second time on TurboTax) who would I contact to get a refund?

I received an extension last year, so I went ahead and paid the expected amount on the federal/state website, but then in October when I went to file the actual documents TurboTax wouldn't let me file them without paying them again.

If you filed for an extension and made payment when you filed for that extension, you would have been asked about those payments when you did finally file your tax returns.  You should have entered the tax payments you made with extension.

You should have a credit balance with both the IRS and your state taxing authority.  You'll need to contact each of them to discuss this issue and have your overpayments refunded.

To contact the IRS:

How do I contact the IRS?

To contact your state's Department of Revenue:

How do I contact my state department of revenue?

@usergabbyc

You do not contact the IRS to say you overpaid.

( you won't be able to get through anyway).

IRS computers will calculate your overpayment and adjust your refund.

@romodude77 - are you logging in with the same ID you used when you paid the 1st time? something doesn't make sense.  How much did you may the 1st time and how much now?  are you changing something which causes you to upgrade????

If you used and paid for the TurboTax Deluxe online edition and e-filed your extension request with a tax payment, then you have to sign onto the online account using the exact same User ID and password you used to create the account.  You do NOT need to create a new account and pay again for the online account.

What did you purchase and pay for?   Did you pay for online TurboTax?  If so you have to access the exact same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the extension and paid.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due.  Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.
