I'm waiting to ammend my tax return. Only the federal has been accepted, not the state. Can I go ahead and start the ammendment even if state return is still pending?

No.  You do not amend until the Federal return has been processed and you receive any refund.

Do not rush to amend - no hurry. You have 3 years to amend and amended returns are taking 4-6 months or longer to be processed so waiting a few weeks will make little difference and amending too soon might just compound the problem. (If you amend today you probably will not see the results until August or September).

To amend your 2021 tax return:

-- First, *wait* to see if your return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS or state. DO NOT do anything until you receive the accept or reject e-mail.

-- If rejected, you can correct and re-send your return.

-- If accepted you should *wait* until your return has been processed and you receive your refund or conformation that any tax due has been paid. (If you file an amended return while you first return is being processed it can cause extended delays for both returns if two returns are in the system at the same time). In addition, if the IRS makes any change on your original return, you might end up having to amend the amendment – a sticky process that can take a year or more).

-- Then you can start the amend process.

It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it. That is the only proof of mailing that the IRS will accept.

-- Amended returns can be mailed or e-filed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending:

You can check the status of your amended return here but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up:

The ammendment is to add my dependent who is a full time student 19 year old. He filed his own return separately and checked off that he can not be claimed as a dependent which is incorrect.

My return was rejected, both state and federal since I claimed him unknowing what he did.

So now he amended his to correct he can be claimed.

Should I still wait to ammendment my return? Or do it now to include him as dependent. Filed yesterday.

Yes wait.    Currently amended returns are taking up to a year to process because of the IRS backlog so there is not rush.    The IRS is still working on about 1.5 million unprocessed 2020 returns.

His amended return will not allow you to e-file your amended return it must be mailed.

So it sounds like you took your son off your return so you could efile it  and then you will amend to add him back... if you did then bad move.     Sadly you should have just mailed in the return with him on it.  Using that option   would have only taken a couple of months to process but now you must wait for the original return to be fully processed then MAIL in an amended return (you will NOT be able to efile it for the same reason your original return was rejected EVEN IF the boy amends his return)  and it could take 6 months or much longer to process (currently some are taking more than a year).

Me and my gf just filed our tax returns and we both claimed the same dependents long story short hers got rejected due to us claiming the same dependents and mines went through but we want to change this option so that she can claim the dependents instead this year.  Ive already received my state refund, And I went through and started the amended process should I cancel the amended return until I receive my federal refund ?
