The timing varies depending on when the IRS is able to process your return at the moment. They posted on their website they are continuing to process returns to the best of their ability. Please stay up to date on the issue by checking your refund status. Where's My Refund?

Even in normal times it can take several weeks.   With the IRS having only limited operations due to the Coronavirus, it may be sitting on someone's desk.   And any correspondence from the IRS is markedly limited or non-existent.

Normally you'd be able to phone the IRS to ask about it, but their live assistance call centers are closed.

If you wish, you can try phoning the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service to see if they can see the status of it in the system.   They are especially inclined to help if you have a hardship.   They are based in each state, so your local office may still be taking calls.  At the following IRS website, find the USA map and click on your state, and it will give you the number of your IRS Taxpayer Advocate.

Hi. My taxes was audited. I submitted all requested documentation on 3/6/20, stated due to high volume it could take 30 days for it to be reviewed. On 4/27/20 it stated my case was reviewed, than the next day on 4/28/20 it stated my audit case was closed. What does this mean? Am I going to get my refund . ? It was just one day that it was reviewed and than next day the audit closed. Is that a good thing? All my documentation was accurate. How long should I be notified before they release my State Refund?  😐 My Federal was direct deposit in my bank on 2/27/20. Only my State refund was audited! Will the state be direct as well? . They gave me no information but advised for me to wait to receive a letter if I agree with decision. This is my first time being audited in 20 years

The IRS was not doing any manual processing for about 3 months due to Coronavirus pandemic. 

Many people are in this situation.  There have even been news articles about it.   I'll tell you a way to reach an IRS agent (if you're lucky), and also how to reach the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.

If the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool at https://www.irs.gov/Refunds  says it is still being processed,  you can phone the IRS to see if you can learn anything about the delay.

Here's how to reach the IRS, but it may not be easy.  Part of it is luck.  Due to the Coronavirus, some of the IRS call centers are closed, some are operating with reduced personnel, some are gradually opening back up.  Some users have been reporting that they have finally reached someone.   Here is the normal method to reach a live IRS agent when they are operating smoothly, and I'll also tell you below how to reach the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.

If you received an IRS letter previously, it may have a special phone number for you to use.   Otherwise, here's how to phone general IRS call centers:

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

• First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
• Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
• Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".  
• Then press 3 "for all other questions."
• Then press 2 "for all other questions." 
• It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
• Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
• Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
• I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.

If you continue to have no luck reaching the IRS, you can try contacting the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service for your area.   They are still taking phone calls in most states.  They are especially prone to help if you have an economic hardship, or if there have been continued delays with lack of info from the IRS.    At the following IRS website, find the USA map and click on your state, and it will give you the number of your IRS Taxpayer Advocate.    If the Taxpayer Advocate can't/won't help you, ask them to transfer you to an an IRS agent.  A couple of users reported that at least for them, that was a backdoor route to the IRS.

Hello everyone. So i was audited, sent in my info. Just heard back last month. Had to sign and date a form and i faxed that back . My case is not closed as of 10/23. Any idea when i would see a refund now ?

it's in the IRS hands and no one but it could give you a date with any certainty and I wouldn't bet on that.

Interesting chart put out by the TAS office showing the possible paths a return will take as it is "processed" ... so you can see that even when the "audit" docs are sent the return still has to go thru more hoops before a refund is issued.  How long certain stages take to pass thru is totally dependent on the # of humans available to do the job and as we all know the IRS is way behind due to the covid shut down earlier this year ... so I can see where many places could have a large backlog of returns.  

This chart also shows how returns with refunds and with balance dues are handled in separate "lines" which makes so much sense that balance due returns have been delayed in processing this year as they focus all the personnel available to getting out the refunds first.   

Also consider that the same employees were redirected to putting out stimulus checks this year which means some other processes were either completely closed or severely understaffed.

How long was it before you got your refund or resolution? I used a tax advocate and was told my case was closed on the 17 of February but she called to verify on Feb 25 and it wasn’t done yet. I got a letter on dated March 8 saying not to send anything else and they would complete the review by March 28. I’m so stressed. I m also unhappy that I paid for TurboTax’s extra products and they got my money but didn’t help me at all. I wouldn’t sign up for the extras anymore and I am considering having a tax professional do my taxes this year. Very overwhelmed and disappointed.
