What you are seeing the the data on the Carryover Worksheet which, among many other things, has the carryover of excess HSA contributions from 2019 to 2020.
You cannot edit the Carryover Worksheet when using the Online product; in fact, you can't even see it.
To run the 2020 return in the way you want, you have two choices: one labor-intensive and the other dangerous.
1. The labor-intensive way is to Clear and Start Over your return, and this time do NOT import data from your 2019 return. This means that you will have to enter everything from scratch, like your W-2 information, your personal information, etc. But at least the carryover won't be there.
2. The dangerous way would be to try to delete the Carryover Worksheet (if possible). This is dangerous because there are a lot of fields on the worksheet, and you would be deleting them all - and we have no way of knowing what is in it before we delete it.
To try to delete the Carryover Worksheet (if this is even possible in Online), do:
1. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form
2. delete form Carryover Worksheet
3. Continue with your return
The program will not really delete a form it feels is necessary. You must go back and manually create a blank space instead of a number where you have entered the 2019 information.
Thanks Amy! How do I go back to 2019 and create a blank space?
Now, I am thinking you have finished 2020, you don't want to go backwards to start again. If you are on the desktop version, you could override. Online version, try going through the 5329 form and making all the entries there blank. See if you can force your way through all the carried over information and set it blank, not zero. Good luck!
Just to clarify, I can modify 2019 data in 2020 desktop version? In online version, is there a way I can go thru the 5329 form to get rid of the excess HSA contribution? I do not see an option to directly edit the forms, especially for 2019. Thanks so much!
