Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

How can I change my input data and re-make my printed PDF, which I haven't submitted to the IRS yet, without having to make a TurboTax amended return?

It seems that, once we have "finished" and printed the return, TurboTax does not have a way for us to go back and fix mistakes. Just because we printed the return does not necessarily imply that we have already filed and therefore should make an amended return.

No you don't select a particular state.  You just pick to add a state to let you back into your return.  Are you already  in your return?

If you haven't efiled or mailed your return or it rejected you can go back in and change anything you want.  Do not click on Amend!

Click on Add a State to let you back into your return.

From Tax Home (the first screen you see after you sign in), scroll down to Your tax returns & documents. You may have to select Show to open the drop down.

Select 2020, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this is just the workaround).

Then when you are ready to file you can try to switch to efile.

To resume working on a return that TurboTax thinks you finished,

use the bizarre command trick "Add a State".

Silly, but that's how it's done with TurboTax.

Thanks. Sounds simple, but my state is not on the list of states to select (does not have state income tax) and so there was no way for me to proceed to any screen that had the federal tax data option.

That worked. Thank you very much!

It turns out that the original problem was not that I forgot to enter something; it seems to have been related to the deferral of paying self-employment tax. I kept getting a "needs review" message at self-employment income, but when I went to review I couldn't see anything that needed fixing. Later in the process (in a different place and screen) this self-employment tax deferral came up; after I responded to that the "needs review" message in self-employment income went away.
