Getting a copy of my e-filed 2020 return to amend it.

I have to amend my 2020 return as I made a big error. Unfortunately I did not realize the error until after I hit the transmit button. I had saved the e-filed return before I transmitted it, but upon seeing the $16000 error I went in and found the problem and fixed it.

Now I need to amend the return, but the corrections I made overwrote the erroneous return, so I don't have a copy of it. What do I do? Instead of a $5265 refund, I have a tax due of $10,613, so I need to get the amended return to the IRS by April 15.

How can I find a copy of the return that was filed so that I can re-create the incorrect return?

Sorry----the tax  filing system does not work that way.   You cannot amend your incorrect return yet.   Change your return back to the way it looked before you started trying to "correct" it.   When you amend, you have to be able to work from it exactly the way it looked when you originally e-filed it---otherwise you will start out with a big mess.

You cannot amend a tax return that was just accepted.   You have to wait for it to be processed by the IRS.  Trying to send in an amended return while they are still processing the original return could confuse things and delay your refund for months.

Do not try to change anything on your return now.  When you amend, your Form 1040X has to be prepared from the return exactly the way it looked when you filed it originally.   You have to wait.   Once your return has been processed you will complete a Form 1040X   --- which is not yet available --- and submit it to amend the mistakes made when you filed your original return. It takes the IRS at least four months to process an amended return.

The 2020 Form 1040X does not become available until the end of March 2021 (subject to change).

That's the problem. I freaked out when I saw the error and went in to fix it. I saved my work, forgetting to rename the file to conserve the original return.

It's not a simple error and I have tried to replicate it without success. I am able to wait to get a copy of the filed return but I don't know where to go to get it. I imagine the IRS will be able to provide something, but I don't know if that will be enough. I was hoping that Intuit might have something.

I'm just sick!
