Forgot to claim Frontline Worker Pay

I was confused when it came to taxes regarding the MN Frontline Worker Pay I received. I thought I had heard something about it not being taxed, but now I'm told it had to be claimed as federal income but not state. Will this require an amendment?

Yes, you should amend the Federal return to include the income that you missed.

As for State ... I don't know.   The net amount on your existing Minnesota return is correct, but Minnesota starts with some of the Federal numbers, so Minnesota will likely see your amended Federal return and want to change your State return.  The Minnesota return SHOULD show the Federal amount (including the Frontline pay), then it subtracts it out separately (line 29 of Form M1M).

Wait until you have received your Federal refund before Amending your Federal return.

The Amended Return does not 'catch up' with your original return and correct it.  It's processed separately and can take several weeks to complete.

You will need to amend your federal return if you have already filed and your return has been accepted.

The Frontline Worker Pay should have been included in your federal adjusted gross income for federal tax purposes.  However, it is not taxed by Minnesota so no need to amend the state return.

I'm trying to update my federal taxes in Turbo Tax right now. Does anyone know which line item I should be using to input the MN Frontline Worker Pay? Would this go under the "Other Common Income" grouping and then "Tax Refunds"? I've entered it properly for State now I just want to go in and enter it for Federal so I don't miss anything.

Probably?

This is the part of Turbotax I don't care for.  Turbotax is not real clear about the version you need until you go past a certain point and tells you the next version up is needed.

I have not paid anything yet,  still waiting on a few forms.  Are you using the online version?

It appears on both web and phone app when reporting other income

I got a message from Mn Dept of Revenue it’s only taxable in federal

I did not put down the amount of my frontline worker pay.. I am sure  it asked something about it in terms like" non-taxable " or something so I skipped over it. Your advice is to just wait for them to process and send my refund and THEN do an amendment!?

That's what I have been told to do. So I sit and wait for the forms to come put to amend. Yippee

Hi I enter the hero pay on my state and federal did I get taxed twice?

No.  Frontline Worker Pay is only taxable on your Federal tax return.

This payment:

  • Is taxable on your federal income tax return. Report it on line 8 of federal Schedule 1 (Form 1040).
  • Is not taxable in Minnesota and not included in household income. If you report the payment on line 8 of Schedule 1, subtract it on these lines:
    • Line 29 of Schedule M1M, Income Additions and Subtractions.
    • Line 10 of Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter’s Property Tax Refund.
    • Line 5b of Schedule M1ED, K-12 Education Credit.

Unfortunately amending the return now may be premature. The IRS is supposedly trying to decide if this is even taxable at the federal level. They are suggesting not filing yet to avoid an amended return (again).

So, when you go to Other reportable income, it says that you have to upgrade to Deluxe and now have to pay, it's no longer the Free Edition. Is there another way to put in the Frontline pay without having to pay in TurboTax??

No. If it is requiring you to upgrade, then it will require you to upgrade in order to file the return with Turbo Tax. @Wendy2013

Thank you for your answer.  It was not what I wanted to hear, but that figures for taxes and the government.  It is nice to have been given the Frontline workers pay although now that I have entered it in to be figured with the tax information all the numbers have changed.  My federal dollar amount went down, so did the state refund amount.  With that you have to add the additional cost for the upgraded plan for doing taxes! It has made the great frontline worker pay have kind of a sour taste.
