Economic Impact Payment made to dependent: If my adult dependent received a payment, do I add their $1400 when reporting the amount I received?

Child was not a dependent in 2020 but was in 2021.  They received $1400 as the IRS assumed they would be filing again as a non-dependent.  I received only the amount for myself and spouse.  If I follow the instructions I'll get another $1400 - which doesn't seem right.

No, if you did not claim someone in 2020 and he received the Stimulus, you do not indicate that YOU received the Stimulus for him on your 2021 tax return.  You will receive the Recovery Rebate Payment since you are claiming him as a dependent for 2021

Thank-you.  If you know whether or not he would need to return it, I suppose that's our next question.  Thanks either way!

You only enter the Stimulus payment you actually got.  Then you will get the Stimulus for the dependent you are adding.   You do not report the Stimulus payment they got.  They can keep the payment they got.   They don't have to return it.

You can really  get it now.   It is based on 2021 return.   It's legit.   Their 2020 return was just used to send out the checks fast. It's a IRS loophole.

No, he will not have to return it.  It is perfectly acceptable to claim in your situation. @BJetter
