To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2016, 2017, or 2018 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

I have bought the desktop software but I can not figure out how to prepare/select the year to be 2018.

@rogerscrew The desktop software is ONLY for one specific year.  There is not a way to "select" the year except when you are making the actual purchase of the software.  Where did you purchase the software?  And are you sure you downloaded/installed the software correctly to your own hard drive?  You do not go online and use any passwords or user Id's to use desktop software.  After you install desktop software, you open up the program, update it and use it from your own computer just like you use any other program that you have installed on your own computer.

We often see confused users who think they are using their desktop software, and they just follow their old habits of going online and they mess up by using online software.  The online software is ONLY for 2019.

I did buy the desktop version. When I select a link to buy the 2018 version it takes me back to the 2019 purchase option. I just can't figure out how to get to the option to purchase or select 2018.

A 2018 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
