change filing status after filing

I filed my 2021 taxes married filing separately for a specific reason that was worth the significant extra I had to pay in taxes. However, that reason has now changed and I am wondering if I can refile as married filing jointly and receive a refund for the overpayment?

" if I can refile as married filing jointly "

You AND your spouse can amend to file a joint return if you BOTH agree to filing jointly.   You cannot decide that on your own and amend without your spouse agreeing to it.

Yes. You can amend your return from filing separately to filing married, jointly. Amended returns can take more than 6 months to process.

and just in case anyone else reads this thread...yes, in this case the filing status can be amended....BUT

if it had been the other way around (married-joint --> to any other filing status), then NO, you could not do that (unless the amendment occured before the filing deadline)
