I imported crypto transactions (~3k) within the limits TT allows but I'm unable to print or e-file. @Katina S
Hi,
It seems you have a similar issue I faced. I had Crypto with Robinhood. I had a meeting with a TT representative too, with no success. Here is how I got my issue addressed, and I was finally able to print and e-file.
"If there are many crypto transactions, then the printing and e-filing fail. Uploading csv or direct connection with Robinhood seems to generate too many records. Instead manually insert the total crypto Proceeds and Cost or Other Basis, which will consider just one total gain or loss. In that case, there is an option to attach the PDF version for Crypto (Form 1099 Composite in Robinhood Crypto) as proof.
That solved the issue for me."
How do you do that with Coinbase pro transactions? How do you enter them all as one transaction? And where can you upload a pdf file?
I keep having the same problem? I am unable to e file or print my tax returns. I keep getting the message turbo tax is unable to save the return. I spent 2 hours with TT agent on the phone, then got connected to a specialist who said it’s a TT server problem
I do not know how Coinbase transactions will work. I am just a user of Turbo Tax. I assume there is a csv file with all crypto transactions and there is a PDF file (1099).
In the Cypto section, instead of uploading the CSV file or connecting with coinbase or Robinhood, there is an option stating if you want to enter the crypto transactions manually. Then it says if you have more than four (or five, I do not remember exactly) transactions. If you say yes, then you can enter the information on the last page of the PDF. On the last page of the PDF I have "total crypto Proceeds" and "Cost or Other Basis". If you enter them on Turbo Tax, it will subtract Cost basis from total crypto Proceeds to compute the net gain. Then you will have the option to upload the PDF file. (If you uploaded CSV earlier, you will see that the net gain/loss is the same as the new entry. Please make sure to remove the previous entry that was automatically retrieved from CSV or by connecting with coinbase.)
Somewhere it asked be to select one of several types of transactions. I only had a type involving "SHORT TERM TRANSACTIONS FOR NONCOVERED TAX LOTS", or it was something like Transactions that were not reported to IRS by the crypto brokerage.
Please note that I do not remember the exact steps because I am just a Turbo Tax user trying to explain things based on only this year's experience. I did not have much crypto transactions in the previous years, so I never faced this issue.
Wow, thanks! That solved it. I didn't see a place to attach the pdf though.
No problem. If you didn't see the screen to upload a .pdf it may be the option isn't available if you are using TurboTax CD/Download version. You can send a copy of your statements with Form 8453 to the IRS, include Form 8949 if it is in your tax return.
If you are e-filing your tax return, then mail your statements along with Form 8453 to the following address within three days after the IRS accepts your tax return:
Internal Revenue Service
Attn: Shipping and Receiving, 0254
Receipt and Control Branch
Austin, TX 73344-0254
If you need a blank Form 8453, you can download this pdf, enter your address information and check the box for Form 8949 (this form is really just a cover sheet).
Deleting the transactions worked. I had to pay for a crypto tax service that compiled my transactions into a smaller report. Can’t believe I had to spend so many hours with TurboTax agents who had no idea what was going on. I also had to pay like 260 for the crypto tax service plus the 90 dollar for TT premier! That’s ridiculous
Personally I prefer bitcoin.tax to help prepare crypto transactions. Its cheaper and has decent features for compiling transactions.
To whoever you may need this.
If you have over 2000 transactions, get yourself a service like Bitcointax.com (https://bitcoin.tax/r/m8LKwe5o). create an account, pay 49.99 and compile all your transactions in smaller csv files. They do have the TurboTax friendly csv that you could just download and load into TurboTax directly. From 3000 transactions down to 10, on bitcointax.com->calculate-> report->options->group by asset -> download csv for TurboTax online.
I hope this helps someone in the future o whoever is having this issue and not spending hours over the phone with TurboTax support, they will just not be helpful to solve this matter. Save yourself some time and unnecessary stress.
Cheers
You are very correct. The major issue is -- Turbo Tax is not even saying that there is an issue with their Crypto CSV interface. That is why many people did not even realize that the issue is coming from crypto transactions. During filing, or printing, Turbo Tax said something like -- there is an issue, it will be fixed soon, if not, contact Turbo Tax. Then, Turbo Tax representatives were not even able to mention that it is a crypto issue.
Thank you for the info on Bitcointax. I did not know that something like this exists.
Hopefully, with these community posts, struggling Turbo Tax users with substantial Crypto transactions will get the information they need.
Finally got it to work thanks to the suggestions. Here's a couple details on my situation, and what fixed it.
I had a total of 3300+ transactions across many different platforms.
KuCoin 2500
Robinhood 570
Coinbase 84
Coinbase Pro 15
Gate.io 8
Kraken 48
etc.
Solution:
All I did was delete the Robinhood income, and used the "try a different way" followed by "type it in myself" function. I entered the Cost, Proceeds, and Robinhood account number, then was prompted to upload a required 1099 PDF provided by Robinhood. This brought the Robinhood transactions from 570 to 1. Tried filing again, and it worked.
I may have gotten lucky that, that was the only one I had to do that with. Not sure if it worked for me because it reduced my transactions to a number that TurboTax could handle, or if it had anything to do with Robinhood. Either way, hope this helps as it helped me.
As many people have mentioned if you are getting the error of "Your transaction didn't go through We could not e-file your return for the following reason: We had a problem while saving your return for filing. Please try to e-file again and if that fails contact customer service."
It is due to the number of crypto transactions you have in Turbo Tax, either by API or .CSV file upload
My solution that worked was to delete the .CSV file and manually upload a one-line transaction with my total proceeds and total costs basis
The Turbo Tax Specialist told me I didn't have to mail in anything else even though we only put a one line transaction with the total amount, I mentioned If I had to mail in all my detail transactions and she said that was not necessary but on here I am reading to send in the 8949 along with another form within 3 days that my taxes are accepted,
is this something that is necessary for me to do? Will I get an audit if I don't mail in my detailed transactions for crypto and I only have a CSV excel sheet file, Do I just print that and mail it in? how else would they see my detailed transactions?
I am not a tax advisor, just a TT user suffering from the same mess all are talking about in this thread. I will say that please send the additional documents by mail to IRS. Include a letter mentioning that you e-filed via turbo tax and later discovered that IRS might need these supporting documents. Then tender an apology for the inconvenience.
If IRS still needs more documents, they will probably ask for it.
Last year, IRS sent me a letter around end of summer stating that I have to pay additional couple of hundred dollars. I just paid it via the IRS website as soon as I read the letter. Somehow Turbo Tax miscalculated things, or maybe I did not understand some of the questions Turbo Tax asked during my tax preparation. Either way, IRS just asked to pay the additional amount as IRS calculated it; there was no audit or any other complexity.
All I am saying is, I try to pay the correct amount of taxes. I do not have any intention of hiding my income from IRS. So, no worries. If IRS finds errors, they will inform me. (Probably I am saying a dumb thing but hey, isn’t life already complex enough?)
Again, this was not a tax-related advise. I just mentioned what I would do.
My issue is the same as below and i have been trying for 2 days to file. I was initially informed it was because the system is probably overloaded and to try again later. Consequently i had to apply for an extension. It also stinks because the coin tracker integration was advertised as seamless between cointracker and turbo i am nearly at a spend of $800 and still cant file my taxes. Surely it would help to show an error message which makes it clear as to the problem instead of try again later. Does anyone know if there has been an update as to how to get round the problem.
Some users described the work around for this several messages ago. The trick is not to use the integration and enter summative things manually for crypto. Please check the details from the previous posts.
Yes, it is a mess at Turbo Tax’s end. Even Turbo reps do not know about it much. At least these community posts are here so that users can help each other.
