Can I get a copy of my Tax return from 2008 even though the documents available only go back to 2012. What do I do?

TurboTax and the IRS save tax returns for seven years.   Your 2008 return is gone if you did not save a copy for yourself.

Thank you for your response. Its hard to imagine why the IRS is asking me for info from my 2008 Taxes when they themselves do not have a copy of my original return. I threw out everything more than 7 years old, but now, of course, I am finding I should have saved all the tax returns. Oh well. Guess I will have to figure out another way.

How were you contacted by the IRS?   Be aware that the IRS never calls you---so if you received a phone call about an old tax return it is a scam.  The IRS would only contact you by mail.   Did you get a letter from the IRS?

Hi xmasbaby0. I had not filed taxes for a number of years due to medical/memory problems that have now been resolved. I contacted the IRS with the intent to rectify the situation. They in turn sent me a notice that I still owed for a $5000 first time home buyers credit in 2008! I paid it but now I can't prove it. So I am trying to get both my 2008 and 2009 returns. I am now also working with a tax attorney trying to get this settled.

Thank you though for warning me about the scams. I have been pretty vigilant about watching out for those and NEVER give out information over the phone.

Unless you printed them and kept a hard copy in your files, it is not possible to obtain them - nobody else would have them.

How did you pay is in 2008?  Perhaps old bank records would show the payment to the IRS.
