I messed up on my wife and mines taxes this year, we have a little girl and I didn’t claim her because for some reason on my wife’s taxes we were going to get a bigger income. It being the 1st year I agreed that it should go to my wife. So to correct my actions, I amended my taxes so she can file hers. The amended check was still sent to my account, however my question is if my wife mails in her taxes, would she still get that amount or what should I do? I’m trying to avoid talking to the IRS
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
First, if you are married, you can only file as Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separate, unless you were separated for the last 6 months of the year. If that applies, one of you may be able to file as Head of Household.
If you Amended your original return to remove the child you claimed, your Amendment won't be processed for up to 16 weeks. If you Efiled your Amendment, your wife would need to mail in her return, as you mentioned.
She will receive the Refund indicated on her return; however, since your Amended Return has not yet been processed, one or both of you may still receive a letter from the IRS asking for verification of the claim.
Thank you so much!
