I just e-filed my returns and they were accepted. I just noted that I did not enter one of my HSA forms, which will change my federal tax owed slightly. How do I amend?

I just e-filed my returns, and they were accepted. However, I just realized I neglected to add information from my 1099-SA, which would change my Federal Tax owed slightly. How do I amend this return? I already entered the updated info In my return.
My TurboTax is downloaded via code from Amazon

Slow down.   Do not try to amend until your original return has been fully processed.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need became available in late February,  But wait until your return has been processed.

If your return has been accepted and you are receiving a refund, as xmasbaby0 stated, you want to wait to amend the return until you receive your refund.  Doing so beforehand will cause additional delays in processing your return.  Once your refund has been received, or if you are not getting a refund, you can follow these steps to amend the return:

If your return is accepted, you will need to follow the following steps in TurboTax to amend the return:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax
  2. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online
    • If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax CD/Download below instead
  4. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue
  5. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change
  6. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return

I just e-filed a Federal return for 2022, and it was accepted. I am using this product:

TurboTax Deluxe 2022 Tax Software, Federal and State Tax Return, [Amazon Exclusive] [PC/MAC Download]

I did not enter one of my 1099 HSA forms, and I need to amend the return. I do not see any of the tabs/areas that are referenced in the turbotax "help" instructions to amend this return.

It sounds like you already messed around with your return by going into it and trying to fix your mistake, but you did not follow the proper steps to amend.   When you amend a tax return you have to begin the amended return from the original exactly as it appeared when you filed it.   So----before you amend you have to put things back to EXACTLY the way they were before you e-filed.

THEN--- wait for the original return to be processed.  Once it has been processed, open up your desktop software to that return and go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Tax Forms>Amend a return.   That way you will be preparing a Form 1040X to send in to the IRS.

You’ll need to start with your original numbers before amending your return, as Tax Champ xmasbaby0 says.

If you’ve already entered your 1099-SA, go back and delete it.

  1. Type 1099-sa in Search (magnifying glass) in the top right corner
  2. Jump to 1099-sa
  3. On “Here’s what we have so far,” select Delete next to your 1099-SA
  4. Tap Forms in the top right corner.
  5. In the left column, tap Form 1040. Compare the info in TurboTax with the copy of the return you sent to IRS. Make sure all the lines match. If they don’t, you’ll need to make more corrections.
  6. Tap Step-by-Step where Forms used to be to get back to the interview mode.

As Tax Champ xmasbaby0 says, watch until the IRS processes your return and sends your refund (or accepts your payment) before amending.

To amend your return”

  1. Type amend in Search (magnifying glass) in the top right corner
  2. Jump to amend
