Hello, I filed original return in early March now I amend the original return . My question is, the $ amount difference in amended return is say $ 800, turbo tax is asking to send a check for $ 800 with the amended return. Will IRS refund the original return amount which means that IRS did not deduct any amount so therefore when I file amended return I pay back IRS $ 800 OR do I just file amended return without a check for $ 800 and assume, that based on the amended return IRS will only issue refund of the amended return. Please help me.
Thanks, Casey007

It is my opinion that you should wait until you receive the refund from the IRS for your originally filed return before submitting your amended return. That will make things easier and less complicated with regard to payments and refunds.
Then, once you have received the original refund, you know that the IRS has completely processed the original return. At that point, you can file the amended return with a payment of $800 due to the changes that you made. This will ensure that the IRS is only processing one tax return at a time for you and once the amended return is sent and paid, you do not need to worry about it any longer. You are also done with your return.
As far as timing goes, you have until the due date of April 18th to file the amended return and payment without any additional penalties or interest.
I concur ... do NOT file the amended return until the original return has fully processed and you have the original return in hand. The IRS may change the return so the amendment must start with the return as changed by the IRS thus you cannot file the amendment yet ... hang in there ... you have 3 years to file the amendment and pay the balance due.
Look at the form 1040X …
Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.
If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:
On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.
On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received. If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it. If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.
Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.
Thank you so much I will wait until my original return is processed and I receive my refund. I am sure IRS will send me a letter. If they ask for over payment, then I will send a check.

Thank you like you said, will wait for refund from the original, then file amended return with payment.
Just need to know, will IRS charge interest/penalty if paid amount due later in
the year since I have to wait for my refund, don't know how long it will take.
