After you file
It is my opinion that you should wait until you receive the refund from the IRS for your originally filed return before submitting your amended return. That will make things easier and less complicated with regard to payments and refunds.
Then, once you have received the original refund, you know that the IRS has completely processed the original return. At that point, you can file the amended return with a payment of $800 due to the changes that you made. This will ensure that the IRS is only processing one tax return at a time for you and once the amended return is sent and paid, you do not need to worry about it any longer. You are also done with your return.
As far as timing goes, you have until the due date of April 18th to file the amended return and payment without any additional penalties or interest.
