Look at your son's Social Security card. You must enter his name on your tax return Exactly as it is shown on the card. The name on the card and the Social Security number Must match or the IRS will reject the e-filed return.
That can mean that someone else has already filed a tax return using your child's SSN. If you have double-checked and made certain that you entered the SSN's correctly, then the only way to file now is to print sign and mail your tax return. A Social Security mismatch cannot be overcome---when it happens--- you have to mail your return. The IRS processes mailed returns differently and they will sort out whether someone else claimed your child.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Also be sure his Date of Birth is correct.
