No one can file a 2017 return until mid January so what delay are you talking about ?

And the IRS had not even given a date when they will start accepting 2017 tax returns pending the outcome of tax law changes by Congress.  Normally it is around the Jan 20 time frame but this year who knows.

I was not trying to file for 2017.   I was trying to file my last years taxes.

Online is only good for the current year 2017 so you have to buy the Desktop CD/Download program here <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/">https://turbotax.intuit.com/persona...

Or you can get the blank forms from the IRS and do them by hand.  Either way you will have to print and mail prior year returns.  And send each year in a separate envelope so the IRS doesn't miss any.

If you started the 2016 return on the online 2017 program ...

We can't delete your account, per se. But you can remove the data.   We will keep the username and password you created in case you ever want to return to the website.

If you would like to erase the data you have entered, you can do that by following these directions:

1.     While in your TurboTax Online program (after clicking Continue your return)
Select tools.

2.     Then click on Clear & start over.

3.     On the Are you sure you want to clear your return? pop up screen, if you are sure about clearing all your entries and starting over, click Yes.

4.     Then a new screen confirms you have cleared your entries, click Continue.

All of your entries will now be erased.

When can I file for 2017?

Downloads for 2017 federal desktop software are currently available; online TurboTax became available on November 30.  State software typically takes longer to be available, so do not expect to be able to prepare a state return until later in January (at least).

Some federal forms are not finalized yet pending tax law changes that are still being worked on.  Many state forms are likewise not finalized.

Do not try to prepare your return using your pay stub.  The information on your pay stub will not match the W-2 that will be sent by your employers to the IRS.  Trying to file early and then ending up having to amend because you used incorrect/incomplete information is counter-productive.  If your return is incorrect, and you have to amend it, it will take months for the IRS to process your amended return.

Employers, banks, Social Security, brokers, etc. have until the end of January/early February 2018 to provide you with the documents you will need to enter on your 2017 tax return.

The IRS will not be accepting returns until an as yet undetermined date in January.  They will not begin issuing refunds until at least mid-February.
