Are you filing a Joint return and you are over 65?  Are all your deductions on Schedule A?  What amount does A line 29 have?

Schedule A line 29 is $43,636.  Box 29, NO is checked. Box on line 30 is not checked.  Income is $134,573 (under $156,900).  Filing jointly and wife and I are over 65.  All deductions are on Schedule A.  Amount on a line 29 I $43,636.

That's an even 10,000 difference.  Did you add a deduction after you filed?  Does 10,000 ring any bells with you?

$43,636 - $13,636 = $30,000 (not 10,000). Did you really have almost $44k in itemized deductions?
If so, the IRS likely wants receipts, cancelled checks, etc.

I think you just made a typo.  Just send them a copy of your schedule A.  Don't know how I got 10,000.  Too many numbers around here and I'm not well.

But first verify that what you put on Schedule A is indeed correct.

What about line 40?  1040 line 40 is either your Itemized Deductions OR the Standard Deduction.  If you took the Standard Deduction you won't have a Schedule A.  How much is on line 40?

Keep in mind that itemized deductions phaseout at high income levels.

The "recommend answer" above from a "superuser" is completely useless. What I discovered after FOUR HOURS of wasted time and three telephone calls is that you have to go to forms view of the 1040 line 64 then click on it to see little magnifying glass icon "go to supporting form." There you will find the answers you need.
That the "Recommended Answer" to the question is "send them copies" is beyond comprehension. That it took THREE phone calls to TurboTax "experts" to get the information I needed (which was then available within seconds) is beyond pathetic.
The TurboTax employee who "recommends" above posted "answer" must be a double agent working for H&R Block or some other competing tax service, or an intentional implant to frustrate users so much that they will give up and subscribe to "turbotaxlive" for $179.  Nice.

The answer is right for the question. If you got a letter from the IRS you need to mail them back all your actual W2 and 1099 that show withholding on them to match the amount on 1040 line 64. The IRS is double checking what you reported on line 64. They might not have received a W2 copy from your employer to match to your return.
