My wife and I are filing jointly. We each received a Letter 6475 with an amount of $2800. Do I add them together for $5600 or is $2800 the total I enter for taxes?

While the total deposit for Advanced Child Tax Credit payments shows on the IRS portal under each taxpayer, the letters split the payments to accurately reflect the credit given.  Each parent was entitled to 1/2 of each payment.

So, if your deposits added to $1,500 in total then the letters split the funds and applied $750 to you and $750 to your spouse.  This is how you should enter the information in TurboTax Online.

For the specific steps to enter the info into TurboTax Online please see How do I enter my advance Child Tax Credit payments in TurboTax?

The letter 6475 is for the third stimulus payment (not the advance child tax credit) ... so how much did you get total did you get between you?   Did you have 4 people on the 2020 return ?   If so and you filed a joint return then  you would enter the $5600 (1400 x 4) when asked.    If there was only 2 people on the 2020 return then you only got 2800 (1400 x 2)  then enter only the 2800.

If you each  also got a letter 6419 for the advance child tax credit then you must enter the amount as printed on both letters as instructed.

So what is the correct answer? the expert answer refers to the advanced child tax credit. Letter 6475 refers to 2021 Economic Impact Payments. We both received a Letter 6475. Each letter said $2800. So in TurboTax, do I enter $2800 or $5600? Please provide a direct answer. Thank you.

Letter 6475 is for the 3rd EIP payment of $1400 per person.

Did you claim two dependents?   Did you receive $1400 per person?   4 x $1400 =  $5600

If that is the case---then yes $2800 for each spouse is what you need to enter.   Or are your letters wrong?   Did you have NO dependents and did you get letters that say you EACH got $2800?

Enter $5,600.

Here is what I found on IRS website:

"... If you received joint payments with your spouse, the letter shows the total amount of your half of the payment. Each spouse may receive their letter at different times. If filing a joint return in 2021, include both amounts when calculating the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. "
