But can they claim you in 2020? You might still qualify as a dependent even if you have income.
If you were claimed as a dependent in 2019 but not in 2020, you can still get the Recovery rebate credit on your 2020 return even if your parents got it for you. And actually if you were over 17 in 2019 they did not get it by claiming you as a dependent. They only got it for dependents under 17.
When you go through the federal review tab it will ask how much you got if any. Enter a 0 in the box if you didn't get one. Or to enter your stimulus payment in TurboTax, type "stimulus" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to stimulus."
After you have entered your tax information and are ready for the Federal Review, it will be the first question.
If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and it will ask about payments received.
The Recovery rebate credit is on 1040 line 30. It either adds to your refund or reduced a tax due.
I’m 21 and have been since September. They have not claimed me at all for my 2020 taxes because they know I was filing. The problem with the Recovery rebate is I don’t even know if I can do it anymore since I already filed my taxes already and got my tax refund. So what do you think? Like what should a good next step be because when I used the payment tool on the IRS website it says unavailable and I’m not sure if they need more info or I’m not eligible because of this!? I appreciate your responses this whole thing is very confusing considering the fact that the IRS doesn’t even want people contacting them about this!
