I moved to another state as of Jan 1, 2025. I'm not sure what to put in for my address: new or old, for both state and fed forms. I don't think any mail will be forwarded to my new address if I use my previous state/address and state or fed need to contact me. Yet, can I have my new state address on my previous state tax return. Will it cause problems with TurboTax and which state forms it brings up for me to use.

Use the address that you want the IRS to use if they need to mail you a letter or a check. The IRS and your state know that people move. When you are in MY INFO, it is going to ask if you lived in {state} in 2024 or if you made money in any other state. Go through those questions carefully.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have started the TT and will have to go back and look at things.
TurboTax will not let you enter a date in calendar year 2025. We closed on our new house 01/02/25 but all 2024 income made in previous state. How do I use current address and avoid this error?
Use your current mailing address on your tax return. You need to give the IRS the mailing address to use if they need to mail you a letter or a check. But in MY INFO you will be asked questions about whether you made money in any other state, whether you moved, etc. You will say you made money in the "old" state and enter some additional information about that. You will pay state tax to the state you lived in during 2024---if that state has a state income tax.
Thanks! I updated to new address we moved to 01/02/2025. All good.
But when you answer if you made money in another state and then answer which state you moved from, it then asks for the date you moved, when I respond with the date 01/02/2025, TT will not accept a date in 2025 saying it must be earlier (assuming it’s looking for a date in 2024). If I enter, 12/31/2024 it accepts.
We had a Purchase and Sales agreement in place in 2024, but did not close until 01/02/2025.
Is there a work around?
Thanks!
Use 12/31/2024 You are, after all, filing a 2024 income tax return. The software wants information for 2024; anything that happened after 12-31-2024 does not go on a 2024 return.
So the answer "use the new address" does not work, since it's my new address as of 01/02/25. I have to use the old address in the previous state as I'm filing 2024 taxes in that state. Fed shouldn't care, but TT has a bug to not allow this to be have a new address for 2024 when you file in 2025 from a new state.
Does anyone know how to fix this or just use the new mailing address option?
Sorry, but you are confused. Use your new address on your tax return. The IRS and your old state are well aware that people move. It would be a mistake to use an old address on a tax return----how would the IRS or the state send you a letter or check if you use your old address? You need to use your current correct mailing address, despite the fact that you no longer live in the old state.
