Maryland Interest after filing

So I have several investments and last year those investments meant that the tax I paid throughout the year was less than 90% of my taxes owed, which though I paid the taxes out in full I am still subject me to further costs due to interest in taxes not paid throughout the year. Having lived in Maryland for 13 years this is the first time this has been an issue, how is one supposed to know prior to tax statements that this will be an issue?
