Last year Turbo tax didn’t have a place for my iowa homeschoole expenses and we didn’t get money back. Will there be a spot this year? We should get 25% back.

On the Iowa Form IA 1040 for tax year 2023 the home school expenses would have been entered on Line 9, Tuition and textbook credit for dependents K-12.  In the TurboTax 2023 software for the state of Iowa there would have been a section where you would have been asked home school expenses.

The TurboTax Iowa state software for 2024 should also include the section asking about home school expenses

Go to this Iowa website for information on reporting the expenses - .Tuition and textbook credit for dependents K-12

Go to this Iowa website for a copy of the 2023 IA Form 1040 - https://revenue.iowa.gov/media/2746/download?inline

In the Iowa "Online" interview, I think you just enter your expenses in the regular Tuition & Textbook area.

Should be similar with the Desktop software.  A sidebar explanation indicates that for non-public school dependents the education must be provided according to Iowa Code section 299A.1(2)(b), 299A.2 or 299A.3....which includes parent instruction.

BUT, I'm not an IA resident, nor am I conversant as to what textbooks expenses would be allowed. For instance, I was reading one review that indicated that the texts would have to be consistent with what the Public schools provide.  For example: I suspect that religious textbooks, Bibles, Korans, etc. are not included...not sure what else might not be allowed to be included.

Iowa Code section 299A.1(2)(b), 299A.2 or 299A.3...essentially indicates:

      • 299A.1(2)(b)
Private instruction must be provided under the supervision of a licensed practitioner or by a parent, guardian, or legal custodian.
      • 299A.2
Private instruction is provided by a licensed practitioner. The practitioner must have a valid license or certificate from the state board of educational examiners.
      • 299A.3
Private instruction is provided by a parent, guardian, or legal custodian. The provider must meet certain requirements, including:
        • Submitting a report to the child's school district
        • Ensuring the child is evaluated annually
        • Reporting the evaluation results to the child's school district and the department of education

Private instruction is considered competent if it results in the student making adequate progress
