If you ultimately didn't pay anything to attend school, either with money or with loans, you are not eligible for a tax credit.
You don't want to claim a tax credit that you are not entitled to just because you got a 1098-T. It probably would catch up with you- possibly through a notation on your 2017 1098-T.
