It depends.  You need to know what specifically was corrected on the W-2.  If the correction does not have to do with income or withholding amounts, it is likely that you only need to keep the form for your records.  If the W-2c changes information on your tax return, however, you will need to file an amended return for this year's tax year.  While you are not required to do so by April 17, 2018 (the filing deadline), if you owe additional tax, if you don't pay the additional tax by April 17, 2018, then interest will accrue on the tax due until paid off.  Please see this FAQ on how to prepare the amended return (I would recommend preparing the amended return, and if you owe nothing additional, you can choose to not mail it.  But you want to see for certain): https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3288565

I received a w2c after i filed my taxes. Do i need to file this w2c this year or can i file this w2c in the next tax year ?

Hello,

My employee did not include the healthcare cost in Box 12DD. They correct the error and submitted to the SSA. They send us all a w2-c with the healthcare amount. Do I need to file the w2-c with my return? What happens if I already submitted my taxes?

Thank you!

My employee corrected the cost employer-sponsored health coverage in Box 12DD and my Federal and State returns were already taken care of.

I filed taxes...missed a W2...it had wrong social number...one number off. Well I contacted company..send me a corrected W2 form...w2c I believe..so what do I do now my return was accepted by irs and for 35 days still says your refund still processing. So what do I do with this w2c so I get my refund quickly?

It might delay your refund for months, but do not amend until you receive it.   It can only be reported on a 2020 amended tax return.    You should amend to be sure that the tax is credited to the correct account.  If the IRS catches it and changed it for you then amending is not necessary.   Also check with the SSA to be sure Social Security is credited to the correct account.

Do not rush to amend - no hurry. You have 3 years to amend and amended returns are taking 4-6 months or longer to be processed so waiting a few weeks will make little difference and amending too soon might just compound the problem. (If you amend today you probably will not see the results until August or September).

To amend your 2020 tax return:

You should *wait* until your return has been processed and you receive your refund or conformation that any tax due has been paid. (If you file an amended return while you first return is being processed it can cause extended delays for both returns if two returns are in the system at the same time). In addition, if the IRS makes any change on your original return, you might end up having to amend the amendment – a sticky process that can take a year or more).

-- Then you can start the amend process.

It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it. That is the only proof of mailing that the IRS will accept.

-- Amended returns can be mailed or e-filed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending:

You can check the status of your amended return here but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up:
