My wife sent a check to pay off her taxes due before I did this years taxes . Then they kept our refund as well for the same . She has called multiple times and gas spent hours on the phone yet they just say they don't show an overpaid account . Kind of funny both checks would create the account to zero . Is there any other ways to go about this . Little upsetting that They are keeping her check and our refund . They make it sound like one of the payments just disappeared. They also say it could be interest. But that can't be possible at 80% interst for 1 month payment. Can you please help.

You say that your wife sent in a check----did the check clear your bank account? You mention that it was for "her" taxes. What do you mean by that? Did you file married filing separately? What are "her" taxes? Was she self-employed? Did she send in an estimated quarterly payment? Please provide some details about the check your wife sent and why she sent it.
Then you say they kept "our" refund. So the IRS offset the refund shown on your Form 1040? Was there an amount on line 35a of your tax return? And they kept all of it? Have they sent you a letter about that yet? Usually it takes a few weeks after a refund is offset and then they mail you a letter to explain why they took your refund. Did one of you owe back taxes or child support? What does it say on the IRS refund site about your 2022 refund?
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2022 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
If you had a prior year debt and sent a payment then went ahead and filed your return that had a refund on it which they kept to pay off that same balance due then it may take months to process and the IRS to notice the double payment and refund the excess amount. If you file a joint tax return and your spouse sent a payment using her SS# then it could slow things up ... the IRS needs to line up the spouse payment to the primary taxpayer SS# on the joint return ... this has always been an issue with the IRS.
Ty for your response.. one can only hope they figure it out.
