In order to include the capital gain distribution as part of your return, you will need to file an amended return.

Before starting to amend, you should wait to see if your return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS.  If it is accepted, then you can go ahead with the amended return.  If it is rejected, simply include the additional income before you resubmit your return.

Additionally, I would recommend that you wait until your original return(s) have been processed and you have received your refunds before filing the amended return.  This will also allow more time just in case you still have some tax forms coming to you.

To get started on the amended return using TurboTax online, sign in to your account and click Amend (change) Return.
