If I owe federal taxes, will the IRS take it from my state return automatically?

Hi!

After filing tax, I owed $2 for federal tax and was owed $307, and it says i would get total of $305 as tax return. In this case, will the IRS take $2 from my state return automatically? Is there any document or payment I need to submit for $2 that I owed for federal tax?

No.

Your state tax due cannot be paid from your federal refund.  Your federal tax cannot be paid from your state refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund.  The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.  You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other.  It is not. The ONLY thing you can pay for from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees if you chose that option.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

Taxes owed can never be paid from a tax refund, federal or state.

When you were in the File section of the program on Step 2, you were given several option on how to pay the federal taxes owed.  You could not completed or filed your tax return without making a selection.

How you chose to pay the taxes owed will be on the Filing Instructions page for the federal tax return.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2022 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return
