"...didn't work"   but did you receive any other income?  Unemployment?   Social Security?  Retirement income?  Rental income?  Investment income?

If I didn’t work last year do I still need to file a tax return?

If you have no income other than social security or welfare benefits, then no, you would not need to file.

 

If you have investment income, unemployment, rental properties, pensions, 401K or retirement distributions, or other taxable income, then yes.
