I went into Where's My Refund and the status bar was gone, and the message said We are still processing your return we will give you a date soon. Should I be concerned?

Please see Why is there no record of my return at Where's My Refund (WMR)? for reasons why you may be unable to track the status of your refund. You can also try calling the WMR automated hotline at 1-800-829-1954 to check the status of your refund.

Refunds usually take about 21 days after the IRS has accepted your e-filed return. Although, sometimes it can take longer. The IRS is taking more than 21 days (and up to 90 to 120 days) to issue refunds for tax returns with the Recovery Rebate Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit. Please see What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days? for more information.

As of today 4/7/2022 still no federal refund.   WMR says "still processing" but i got an email from turbo tax saying my bank account was going to be debited the tax preparing fee ($30) but it is supposed to be deducted from my federal refund.  To say I am a bit irritated is an understatement.

My refund is several hundred dollars.  The fees are only THIRTY dollars.

TurboTax does not like to wait even if you have to.

They will invade your bank account for their fees.

Definitely the LAST time I use turbo tax.  I have never had a problem in the past.  You would think filing early would be a beneficial thing.

It will come out of your refund as long as you signed and requested during the e file

Maybe you've said in other posts what caused your delay at the IRS.  But in general, filing early offers few advantages and several disadvantages.   Every year many of the issues we see in the forum were from people who efiled early--either before the IRS started processing in late January or soon after.  Most of the fellow-user volunteers who help in this forum, if asked "when" to efile, would likely suggest late February or later in order to encounter fewer problems.

Early filers can also encounter problems with IRS and state forms not being finalized and available due to late changes in tax laws, etc., or due to software programming still getting the kinks worked out of the software.

I realize people file early because they want/need their refund money. If they have EITC or ACTC tax credits, the IRS is not going to start releasing any refunds until after February 15 of each year anyway.  For others whose return has been hung up in "processing" for several weeks, only the IRS knows why, and sometimes the IRS is able to provide some info, but many people can't get through to the IRS.   I've had luck reaching them by phoning a few minutes prior to closing time and getting into the queue, which they continue to finish after closing.

Other than hoping for an earlier refund, I guess one advantage of filing early (unless one is in the IP PIN protection program) is that early filing would prevent a nefarious person from efiling a fraudulent return in your name.

Also paying out of the Federal refund adds another step where problems can occur, although it has nothing to do with a return being hung up in processing at the IRS.    I try not to recommend that option.   Problems with that payment method are one of the most frequent threads in the user forum each year.

If someone has no bank account or credit card, I mention they can buy a prepaid debit card at a store (the prepaid card may have a small fee, but it avoids the 39.99-44.99 service fee for "pay out of refund.")

We are not able to provide assistance to you via the identity verification tool.

If you’ve already filed, processing usually takes 21 days (electronic returns) or six weeks (paper returns).

To check the status of your refund go to: I filed April 1 5071c  letter now what do I need to do

This is mainly a user community forum, and we can't tell you anything specific about your tax refund, but we can tell you how to try to get info, and if you are having an economic hardship, how you can get help from the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service to see if they can find out any info for you or possibly speed things up.

Does the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool find your information but says it is "still being processed"?

https://www.irs.gov/Refunds

If so, you can phone the IRS to see if you can learn anything about the delay, but be warned the IRS is not easy to reach.   I have found that for me it was best to call just before closing time--about 6:50-6:55 PM and go through the steps below.  I figured a lot of folks would not call that close to closing, and that if I was one of the last to get into the queue, they would finish off all the people who were in the queue at closing time.   I still had to wait about 25-30 minutes.

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.

If you have no luck reaching the IRS, or don't get satisfactory information, you can try contacting the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service for your area.    They are especially prone to help if you have an economic hardship, or if there have been continued delays with lack of info from the IRS, so stress those 3 points that I emphasized in bold.    At the following IRS website, find the USA map and click on your state, and it will give you the number of your IRS Taxpayer Advocate.    If the Taxpayer Advocate can't/won't help you, ask them to transfer you to an an IRS agent.  A couple of users reported that at least for them, that was a backdoor route to the IRS.

@Aniyah233 This thread is several years old and has over 500 posts from multiple users.  No one knows what you have the "same" situation for or who you are actually asking "why it was saying that"  ---saying what?   Could you please be more specific about your own issue so we know how to help you?
